BUT I'm still grappling with a number of questions:
1. How long can a long distance relationship last?
2. How long should I attempt to make it last?
3. How long is it possible to go between visits?
4. How long should I wait?
5. Am I totally insane for trying to make it work?
(And, incidentally, one freaking call for applications and I'm positively inundated!)

Is that lack of retraction your answer in of itself?
Those are hard questions. It would be sweet to say that "love" itself is the answer.
Life is rarely that simple.
I hope you can love both each other and yourselves as you find the right answers.
A couple of thoughts. First, the whole "inundated" thing? Kind of passive-aggressive. Second, did this really hit you out of the blue? Long distance is tough. Maybe it's time to keep your eyes open and stop making assumptions.
OK you pain in the arse anonymous blog commenter. It's time for you to take off the mask. What's the point in an anonymous comment anyway?
And, yes, sarcasm can be seen as "passive agressive" -- especially if you don't have a well-developed sense of humor.
I am a different anonymous poster then the above anonymous poster...I am posting in response to your anger at anonymous posts. My thought in being anonymous here is that I am a stranger to you...I have never met you...so even if I told you my name was Mickey Smith or Mary Shelly it would all be the same to you...I could not say one way or the other if that is true for the above poster...if you want anonymous posts off just just them off, then it would never come up.
Point well taken. I'm turning off anonymous comments.
