New Spirituality Needed, Priest Says

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Religious believers would benefit from an inclusive spirituality that fosters mutual acceptance and dialogue, a Catholic priest and expert on Islam says."All people, especially religious leaders, should experience a new spirituality of interfaith, perennial and universal religiosity," the Rev. Philipus Tule said in a talk about the book "Islamku, Islam Anda, Islam Kita" ("My Islam, Your Islam, Our Islam").Calling for a spirituality that unites people of different religions, Tule urged people to ignore traditional thinking that regards one's religion as the only true faith. The rector of St. Paul Major Seminary in Ledalero, on the Indonesian island of Flores, east of Java, said he sends a seminarian each year for a year of pastoral orientation at a pesantren, or Islamic boarding school. There the seminarian "lives together with Muslim students and even joins their prayer," he explained. His seminarians also read the Qur'an because of its spiritual value, he said.Only through a new spirituality can political, theological and anthropological-cultural divisions be resolved, Tule said.
